Alan Cumming has officially bid his goodbye to Instinct Season 3 after CBS canceled the show after two seasons. In a lengthy emotional Instagram post, the 54-year-old star thanked everyone and recalled how everything started.
"So the word is out," Cumming said. "@InstinctCBS will not be returning for a third season."
Cumming went on to say that it was three years ago when he received a galley copy of a James Patterson and Howard Roughan book. From here, he met the showrunner Michael Rauch who was about to adopt the novel to a television series, to which he jumped in.
Now that Instinct Season 3 got canceled, he felt sorry that he would never get to play with Bojana Novakovic again and the rest of the show's cast and crew. Cumming was also grateful for the two previous seasons that he played Dr. Dylan Reinhart. Although it was full of gore and made him feel like a dandy, it was a fun experience for him.
The Good Wife continued to thank Dan Lawson's costumes and selfies with the corpses, catering's vegan options, and his dog's, Lala, occasional guest appearances whenever it got bored in her basket. Cumming felt proud that he had played the first-ever gay leading character in a U.S. network drama.
And because of Instinct, millions of people had seen same-sex marriage portrayed on television for the first time. With that, Cumming hoped that they had changed and opened the minds of people in the process.
According to TVLine, the show has 3.4 million total viewers and just over 0.3 demo rating. It is only half of what Season 1 got. CarterMatt noted the low ratings could have been the reason behind Instinct Season 3's cancellation.
Summer shows are said to be hard to sustain, resulting in getting poor ratings. There are no too many audiences available, and there are also a lot of viewing options that go head-to-head with other series. There are Netflix and Amazon that continuously attract television viewers, making them turn into watching online instead.
By the looks of it, CBS has to work hard to make sure that people will continuously patronize its shows to be successful. Aside from the low ratings, the schedule also affects the shows' performance, along with the lack of a suitable lead-in, promotion, and more. Maybe, there is still a chance to see Instinct Season 3 if the streaming giants will adopt the show to continue its story.
