A new report has suggested that Google is finally planning to launch a follow-up to its Home Mini smart speaker that was released back in 2017. Unlike the Home Mini, however, the new device is expected to be called "Nest Mini," which is in line with the company's plans to rebrand its Home line of speakers.
Earlier this year, Google and Nest announced that they were joining forces and would combine both their products into a single, smart home brand, known as Google Home. One of Google's products, called the Home Hub, was also rebranded as the Google Nest Hub.
Other Google products were also expected to fall under the new brand, including the search engine company's popular Chromecast streamers, Wi-Fi routers, security cameras, and smart thermostats.
As for the new Nest Mini speaker, it is expected to come with not only high sound quality, as compared to the previous model, but it will also be equipped with a built-in wall mount and many other features. This is according to a source that was in contact with 9to5Google.
According to the source, the Nest Mini will have a higher volume control, more powerful bass, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It could also come with around the same size as the previous model since it is a device that was designed for an affordable price.
Other features include a motion sensor that could be used to display volume levels whenever users get close to it, which is similar to the proximity awareness feature found on Google's Nest products. But as for the built-in wall mount, it's not known how this is going to turn out.
It is assumed that most of the Home Mini functionality will also be found in the new speaker, such as the various forms of in-house and third-party services, including, of course, the main and only intelligent personal assistant in Google's Home products, Google Assistant.
"We've heard there are new colors in the plan for the refreshed Nest Mini, but no details yet." 9to5Google writes. "We don't have word on pricing, but it's probably safe to assume the same $49 as the last model."
As of now, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. If it is true, chances are Google will unveil this product alongside its Pixel 4 at the company's upcoming Made by Google event this fall.
