Talks about Bodyguard season 2 were loud and buzzing in 2018 when the BBC series hit international television via the streaming platform Netflix. But now that the buzz has died down will the show starring Richard Madden still be returning on the small screen?
BBC has not yet officially renewed Bodyguard season 2 despite breaking rating records. Madden, however, said that he and the show's creator Jed Mercurio had had a lot of discussions on where the show could go for next season.
Both Madden and Mercurio concluded that it would not be right to rush into the production of Bodyguard season 2. Speaking with BT TV, the actor said that his character needs a long vacation after what happened to him in the first season.
"He's the most famous man in London because of what happens at the end of episode six," Madden shared. "Me and Jed both agree that there's something much more interesting in 'let's catch up with him 18 months later, two years later after this has happened and say where is he now? what's happened to him?'"
To be clear, no one has closed the door on the possibility of Bodyguard season 2 finally coming into production again. Madden said that he's quite excited to tackle the role once more as the bodyguard dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.
It's also up to Mercurio to come up with a storyline that would be better than Bodyguard season 1. The creator told Digital Spy that he'd got even bigger ideas to develop the show into a franchise that would lead to a third or fourth season.
Meanwhile, Madden will be quite busy for the next two years to work on Marvel's new superhero movie, The Eternals, with Angelina Jolie and his fellow Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. By the time he is done with this movie, however, he may start filming Bodyguard season 2 if Mercurio is done with the script.
The creator also said that he has no plans of recasting Madden. His name has been in the cast list from the very beginning.
Bodyguard told the story of an ex-army vet turned police officer who was tasked to protect the Home Secretary Julia Montague (played by Keeley Hawes). Montague was killed off in the middle of the first season under the watch of her bodyguard, thus sending Madden's character into a tailspin.
