American Horror Story: 1984 is the ninth season of the horror anthology series on FX. Set to premiere on Sept. 18, 2019, the latest story has influences from classic slasher movies from the 1980s.

Based on the official trailer, American Horror Story: 1984 has loads of references from movies like Friday the 13thTexas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. The clip is in an introduction of the characters played by Emma Roberts, Billy Lourd, Gus Kenworthy, Cody Fern, and DeRon Horton.

The teaser of American Horror Story: 1984 opens with a group of friends from summer camp who are heading for a trip in the woods. While most of the characters are excited, Roberts' character seems uneasy and on edge.

Things turn for the worst when the group's van hits a man whom they bring back to the summer camp. They later learned that this man was an escaped patient at a nearby facility for people with mental issues.

Fans on Reddit believe that Roberts' character will be the last person standing in American Horror Story: 1984. Her meek, almost virginal character fits all the classic tropes of the "final girl" in a horror movie.

Meanwhile, a couple of anthology regulars won't be in American Horror Story: 1984. Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson have sat this season out after being part of the show for some time.

FX boss John Landgraf explained the reason for these stars' absence in the new season. It has to do with the show getting a reboot after doing the crossovers.

"You had actors that were playing 2-3 different characters. You had to bring back all the cast from prior seasons," Landgraf told the press. "It was a monster in terms of the size of the cast, cost of that cast. You can't do that all the time."

For Landgraf, American Horror Story: 1984 is like a clean slate for the anthology series that will also set up the 10th season. However, the FX boss is not yet sure if the show would have a season 11.

Development of American Horror Story: 1984 started in early 2017 after FX renewed the anthology alongside the previous season, American Horror Story: Apocalypse (Season 8). In February 2019, co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that the installment would star Roberts and introduce a newcomer in Kenworthy. Paulson's role will also be scaled down since she's working on another show. In April 2019, as Murphy confirmed the show's actual title, Peters also announced that he would not be back in the series.
