Fans are currently hyped up over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker after new footage from the film was released at the D23 Expo 2019. One particular shot that had people talking was the surprise reveal of Rey with a double-ended red lightsaber, but many have pointed out that this isn't the only major shocker from the teaser. It is believed that the Star Wars Episode 9 footage also offered a glimpse at a dangerous new villain who could be just as destructive as Dark Rey. Will the upcoming film introduce an evil C-3PO?
In the latest teaser for Star Wars Episode 9, there was a brief shot of C-3PO looking more menacing that usual as he appears to have glowing red eyes. It's an interesting scene since it looks like Threepio is being repaired when his eyes suddenly begin glowing red. So could this mean that the droid is being reprogrammed by the First Order? One theory suggests that the droid being shown isn't C-3PO but an evil version that originated from the comic books.
In the Star Wars comic book Darth Vader 3: Vader, Part III, it is revealed that the Sith Lord has a "specialist" that happens to be a droid that resembles C-3PO. The droid introduces itself as Triple Zero and immediately announces that it is looking forward to torturing the Rebels. Interestingly, Triple Zero is a 3PO droid as well and seems to share Threepio's personality. However, Triple Zero is decidedly more blood-thirsty than the unit protocol droid.
So is it possible that Star Wars Episode 9 will introduce Triple Zero into the Skywalker Saga? Although some believe that the D23 footage featured the sinister droid, there is a huge possibility that it shows C-3PO getting yet another upgrade. After all, he had previously received a new red arm in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It wouldn't be a surprise if Threepio has damaged his eyes in the film and will be needing a fix.
It has already been confirmed that C-3PO will play a significant part in The Rise of Skywalker considering that he is joining Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Chewbacca on a mysterious new mission. Perhaps this is how Threepio will be damaged early on in the film.
Will C-3PO go rogue in Star Wars Episode 9? Find out when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
