Apple has been rumored to be working on augmented reality glasses. However, Digitimes recently reported that the project had been suspended. But new documentation was discovered by MacRumors in the internal build of the iOS 13, which suggests that the Apple AR Glasses might still be in the works.
According to the report, the details of a head-mounted augmented reality device were uncovered in the codes of iOS 13. There is an internal README file in the iOS 13 that identifies a Starboard system shell for stereo augmented reality-enabled apps, which suggests a headset. Additionally, the file reveals that the Cupertino-based tech company is knee-deep developing an augmented reality device with the codename Garta, which according to the report code be one of the multiple prototypes under the T288 file.
The report also shared that aside from the StarBoard mode, the Apple AR Glasses have different scenes and view. Different strings also have reference to ARStarBoardSceneManager and ARStarBoardViewController. Last week, the tech site also revealed that it discovered within the internal Find My app pack an icon showing what seems to be a VR or an AR headset that has a strong resemblance to Google Cardboard.
The icon comes in gray and white colors with on and off variants. Each contains B389 and MockMode terms in its filename. According to the report, it could be the codename that Apple used in tracking items. This means, the icon simply depicts the designated AR mode in the Find My app and does not portray in any way the actual Apple AR Glasses or headset.
Several sources have earlier claimed that the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to release the Apple AR Glasses in 2020. This includes the reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, and CNET. Bloomberg reported in 2017 that the Apple AR Glasses would run in the iOS-based operating system called rOS or reality operating system.
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, has also discussed the idea of augmented reality multiple times. He shared that he thinks augmented reality is profound because the technology augments human performance instead of isolating humans. Speculations from 2018 claimed that the Apple AR Glasses could be a powerful AR or VR device with 8K displays on each eye. However, recent claims suggested that the headset might be dependent on the Apple iPhone.
Whatever Apple is planning about the much-awaited Apple AR Glasses, several sources claim that it might be unveiled this year and might officially release in 2020. This aligns with the iOS 13 references. Given the time frame, the Cupertino-based tech giant only has months to finalize the design and put the Apple AR Glasses into production.
