Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, and LG are just some of the smartphone makers that will release handsets with 5G technology. But, it appears that Apple will not release its iPhone 11 with the next-generation wireless network. With Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G already out, Apple's strategy seems to make sense.
According to Michael Simon of MacWorld, while it is expected that Apple will add several features to iPhone 11 to bring it up to speed with its rivals, the much-awaited flagship from the Cupertino-based tech giant will not have 5G technology. He added that the same might happen to iPhone 12, which is a good thing according to him.
The tech writer revealed that Qualcomm has developed a 5G modem that Apple could utilize for its iPhone 11. The technology is called x55 developed to offer comprehensive support for FDD and 5G NR TDD along with sub-6 GHz and mmWave spectrum. But, it appears that Apple did not rush to use this just to come up with a 5G-enabled iPhone.
According to the report, while the technology is available, there are several issues. The major one is that the mmWave 5G is very limited and the only place guaranteed to avail the coverage is when standing under the node, which even then, might require sometime before the 5G logo appears on the smartphone's status bar. Taking a few steps away from the node the 5G coverage being sold by Verizon is lost.
Apple might be aware of this scenario and would not want to compromise promising that its 5G-enabled iPhone 11 will offer super-fast network but actually not being able to provide one. Another problem is the battery life. With 5G on, the battery life of the smartphone considerably dropped by 60 percent. It is possible that Apple has prototype iPhones with 5G technology but the tech titan understood that the technology is not yet at its prime.
Simply put, Apple will not release an iPhone 11 with support for the next generation wireless connectivity network that is not yet solid. Most consumers simply think that 5G is the IN thing but hardly understand what the technology is all about. Apple also knows that if the network is not that stable releasing a 5G-enabled iPhone will just provide a not-so-good experience to its users, which the company, is most likely not willing to have.
Apple will have an event on September 10. Fans are expecting that it will unveil the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R during the said event.
