In 2015, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. arrived on big screens. While it is a huge milestone for the franchise considering the overall success of the original series in the 60s, the film somehow became a disappointment in terms of viewership records.
The NBC series of the same name that aired from 1964 up to 1968 received a wide cult following. It branched out into various materials, including films, spin-offs, and other media platforms. So when the plans of making a film out of it started to emerge in 1993, everyone was so excited.
However, the film did not make it to the theaters until 2015 as it was only in 2013 that the real development occurred. This is why many are convinced that the film will be a massive success since it has been long missed by its fans.
Although the film has been reviewed as relatively good by its viewers and critics, it wasn't enough as it only grossed about $109 million worldwide on an $85 million budget. And as per Collider, the film's premiere schedule has been a factor to the overall outcome.
Just a few weeks before the premiere, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation came into the theaters. And this probably affected the viewers since both films have the same dynamic and setting.
The unexpected loss of viewers became the standing point of many critics as to why The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2 may not happen. But even so, many fans and reports had pointed out that the success of the film came after when it was released on home screens. And this is the reason why the fandom is now wondering when the sequel will arrive on big screens.
There are no confirmations yet if there will be a sequel. And if The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2 happens, then it might take a while before it premieres on the big screens.
In 2017, the talks of the sequel became even more apparent. And in an interview with Vanity Fair, film star, Armie Hammer, revealed that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2 would finally then be written.
He shared that he previously asked Lionel Wigram, the producer of the film, to start writing the sequel. And shortly after receiving the call, he also revealed that Wigram responded to his request and told him that he would do it. Thus, the sequel will happen.
But it is worth noting that it has been already two years since this interview happened. And up until the recent times, no word has been heard yet from the cast and crew. So, unless otherwise stated or announced, the future of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2 remains unknown.
