The Expanse Season 4 is coming, and there will be new space stations that the crew of the Rocinante will be landing. Showrunner Naren Shankar talked about Season 4's difference from the previous seasons and some updates about it.

"On The Expanse, what I find interesting about it, in terms of hard science and science fiction, is that we really embrace the idea of space as a character, the environment as a character, and it is used to generate drama in an unusual way that most science fiction simply ignores," Shankar told The Crash Couch podcast, via Newsweek. These things are said to give the show a unique visual style and a beautiful signature with a unique identity when it comes to science fiction.

As the Ring Gates is now activated, humanity gets access to hundreds of new worlds that include the planetless Belters. However, the first world that gets colonized by "spacefaring homesteaders" is Ilus, which is one of The Expanse Season 4's primary settings.

In Season 1, Shankar revealed they had done too many location works. At the time, everything was on sets and sound stages. He continued to say they hadn't spent a lot of time on a planet before, so it was already a huge difference for them to be "outside in weather."

The new season's planetary focus is said to begin the stylish change that the show's cinematographer Jeremy Benning proposed. "We chose to shoot all of the stuff on Ilus in anamorphic, 2.39 to 1 - it's a very wide aspect ratio," Shankar explained.

Every time that they're on the planet, it will open up to make everyone feel the "vista" is much larger. When fans watch the show, it will switch back and forth from 16:9 and 2.39 ratio. It has been known that the widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 is now the high definition standard, while the 2.39:1 is the wider anamorphic format that is commonly used for theatrical movies.

The writers, on the other hand, teased The Expanse Season 4 would bring a lot of important scenes on the table, per Dankanator. Everything fans would see would have a big role in its story, and nothing would come unimportant. Missing even a single scene would be a huge narrative loss.

The show's writers have been working hard to make viewers' watching moment worth it. So, they promised to "hold on the trend" in the upcoming episodes. The Expanse Season 4 is set to be out on Friday, Dec. 13, on Amazon Prime Video.
