General Motors recalls almost 3.5 million vehicles over brake issue. This includes pickup trucks and SUVs. The company is also recalling 180,000 Chevrolet Malibu because of disabled fuel injectors.
General Motors is planning to launch a massive recall campaign that will include some of its popular vehicles. So far, there were 113 crashers and 13 injuries reported related to the issue. The brake problem increases the drivers and passengers risk of crashes based on the documents released by a US safety agency.
The problem is with the vehicle's vacuum pump, which, over time can diminish vacuum. This affects the brake that allows vehicles to extend the distance necessary to stop the vehicle. As a result, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that it increases the risk of a crash. General Motors will inform owners of the issue according to NHTSA.
This issue affects more than 3.4 million sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. This includes 2014 to 2018 models of Chevrolet Silverado, 2014 to 2018 models of GM Sierra, 2015 to 2018 models of Chevrolet Suburban, and 2015 to 2017 models of Cadillac Escalade. GM also recalls 180,000 Chevrolet Malibu because of fuel injector issue.
Additionally, 91,000 Chevrolet Express models along with GMC Savanas will be recalled because of seatbelt light problem. 3,400 2020 models of Chevrolet Traverses and Buick Enclaves will also be recalled because of a crack in the engine compartment. Earlier this year, the company also recalled 310,000 vehicles in Canada because of a brake issue.
General Motors will not replace the pumps in the vehicles but will provide lubrication to the vacuum of affected vehicles. There is a chance that recalled vehicles would have its screen clogged and further reduce the vacuum power. The solution will include a tweak to the secondary power brake assist system with reprogramming.
This activates whenever the vehicle senses a problem in the main system. The secondary system, according to General Motors, is limited at lower speeds at the moment. Additionally, General Motors said that the fix would improve the performance of the brake in instances where vacuum power falls and underlined that most reported incidents involved motorists on low speeds. The NHTSA has so far, recorded 111 complaints since November 2018 when it began conducting an investigation into the brakes of the vehicles of General Motors.
If the General Motors vehicle has a brake issue, drivers will feel a vibration in the brake pedal. To compensate for the lack of vacuum power, drivers need to apply extra pressure than usual. Notice of recall will be sent to GM owners starting September 6.
