The previous season of This Is Us opened with the birthday of the Big Three. In the upcoming This Is Us Season 4, it is also a celebration, at least for Rebecca, since she will be introducing Jack to her parents for the first time. However, it looks like Jack will not have a great first impression from Rebecca's parents.
Fans of the NBC drama have seen how Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) as young parents in Season 1 and 2 and how they meet and fall in love in Season 3. In the This Is Us Season 4, viewers will finally witness how the couple's relationship develop that ended up in marriage.
Moore hinted that Rebecca's parents might feel a little bit surprised when she introduces a new boyfriend -- a war veteran to be exact -- to her parents. It looks like her parents are expecting a man like Alan, who their daughter used to date.
It can be recalled that Rebecca dated her high school sweetheart, Alan (Hunter Parrish), for three years before he moved to London to work as a writer. When Alan returned, she wants Rebecca back and asks her to move to New York with him so she can pursue her singing career.
As everyone knows, Rebecca turned down his offer and chase down Jack instead. When the opportunity to meet Rebecca's parents finally came for Jack, things will not go as smoothly as the young couple wants it to be.
"Wouldn't you expect Jack to win anyone over? I would. But her parents can be a bit... tricky. They're a little protective," Moore said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"We've gotten some clues over the course of the show too that [she's] not especially close with her parents later in life. I feel like they don't necessarily understand [her] ambition as a musician. So this is all new territory bringing a boy like this home," she added.
As for Jack, Ventimiglia believes that his character can handle himself really well in high-pressure situations such as meeting the parents of her girlfriend. However, Jack is also going through some emotional stuff since his return from the Vietnam War.
Viewers could recall that Jack and Rebecca first met just right after the latter's return from the war. Aside from the horrors that he saw from the battlefield, Jack is also dealing with the fact that he failed to protect his brother and fellow soldier, Nicky (Michael Angarano). Additionally, Jack has just returned home with an abusive father.
The recent teaser for This Is Us Season 4 has offered a glimpse of the said first meeting. It would be interesting to see how Rebecca's parents, particularly her father, would react to Jack and how they will affect Pearson's relationship. Fans have already seen how Rebecca hates her mother whenever she visited her family because of how she treats Randall.
The West Wing actor Tim Matheson will be playing the role of Rebecca's father. This Is Us Season 4 premieres on September 24 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
