New Amsterdam Season 2 will have an intense premiere this week. Max survived the ambulance crash in the previous season and will also receive great news about his health. However, the hospital will also experience a huge blow after some of its doctors got involved in a road accident that took the life of someone they loved.
In a new sneak peek for the new season, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) is seen talking to his new oncologist, Dr. Valentina Castro (Ana Villafañe), about the progress of his treatment. Castro tells Max that his tumor is finally shrinking.
She also tells Max that, if the improvement on his treatment continues, the medical director at New Amsterdam Medical Center could be cancer-free in six months. However, after delivering the good news, Dr. Castro notices Max's face looks both relieved and sad.
"I know you've missed Dr. Sharpe. If she were here, she'd say the same thing. You beat the odds, you won the cancer lottery," Dr. Castro tells Max.
This raises concern to series fans. Where Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) go?
Helen, who is currently the head of oncology at the New Amsterdam Medical Center, is one of the doctors that get involved in the ambulance crash in Season 1 finale. Along with her were Max, his wife Georgia (Lisa O'Hare) and their new baby, and Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery).
Does this mean Sharpe will get seriously injured, or worst passed away, in the accident? In the Season 1 finale, Helen was not seen in the accident aftermath. Moreover, someone is seen getting covered by a white sheet at the accident site.
However, in the first look video for New Amsterdam Season 2 that was released earlier this month, Helen was seen alive. But, it looks like she sustained some serious injuries from the crash.
The earlier teaser for New Amsterdam Season 2 mentioned that someone would die in the accident. Creator David Schulner also earlier confirmed that not everyone survived in the finale.
"You have seen the lawyer who stole the ambulance, he's clearly dead. But we don't want people to think, like, we're playing a fast one and he's the one who died. In addition to him, one of our key cast is dead," Schulner told TVLine.
The season pilot episode will pick up three months after the accident and then it will go back in time and show how the accident play out in real-time until where the finale left off. Eggold has assured fans that all of the questions left in the season finale will be answered in the first episode.
New Amsterdam Season 2 is set to premiere on September 24 at 10/9c on NBC.
