Dark season 2 has been out on Netflix since June 2019. Subscribers around the world can watch at their convenience all eight episodes of the mind-boggling sci-fi series, which has been described as the German Stranger Things.
The show has received superlative approval from fan sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Critics have also hailed Dark season 2 as more bizarre and addicting than the first season, which was released on the streaming platform in 2017.
Dark season 2 has been cited as the best Netflix series you're not watching by Thrillist and Culture Vulture. Platform subscribers are likely not going to discover the show right away since it's buried under thousands of titles in the Netflix library and it's also in a foreign language.
Co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark season 2 is a whole lot different than American sci-fi dramas. For one thing, there are no recaps at the beginning of each episode and the second installment quickly jumps into another timeline, which can be confusing for those who have skipped the first season thinking that they could get on board with the story right away.
Vox said it best when it cited that Dark season 2 is not a show you simply watch. Rather, it is a series that you have to solve with tons of research and perhaps even a graph.
At the heart of Dark season 2 is a time travel story. While this show opens in 2019, the plot in the first episode quickly delves into the idea that there is another timeline 33 years apart courtesy of a wormhole located in a small, fictional German town.
In the middle of Dark season 2, however, a third timeline (1953) is revealed thus complicating the story further. By the time viewers have binged all eight episodes, the story has expanded with two more timelines: 1921 and 2053.
According to TV Guide, it's not just the time travel element that makes Dark season 2 a must-watch. The series has a compelling character-driven narrative that touches on themes like free will and destiny. While non-linear storytelling can be confusing to viewers, discovering how every character is connected can be satisfying, and the show is great with the build-up.
Netflix has renewed Dark for the third and final season, and filming has been ongoing since July in Germany. The next installment is expected to be released sometime in 2020.
