Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a lot of story arcs to tackle since it is the final film in the Skywalker Saga. The movie will need to reveal the truth about Rey's identity, establish Finn as the hero he needs to be, and provide a suitable conclusion for Kylo Ren.
But, what role will Emperor Sheev Palpatine play in Star Wars Episode 9? As it turns out, a new leak may have confirmed that the villain will be brought back to give fans a truly unexpected plot twist.
It seems like the Emperor's return in Star Wars 9 is already a plot twist on its own. After all, Palpatine was supposedly killed in Return of the Jedi when Darth Vader stopped him from trying to kill Luke Skywalker. On the other hand, a new leak from The Rise of Skywalker shares some interesting details about how the Sith Lord will be brought back in Episode 9. Interestingly, Sheev's strange return will be connected to Kylo Ren.
The leak comes from Making Star Wars, which offers some details about what fans can expect from the third and final trailer of The Rise of Skywalker. The Star Wars Episode 9 trailer will reportedly feature a scene where Kylo Ren finds an old man, who is then revealed to be the Emperor.
In the scene, Palpatine is strapped to a "cross-vertical med chair," and Kylo actually attempts to kill the former Sith Lord. However, just as Kylo is about to stab Sheev with his lightsaber, the villain laughs and declares that he is Darth Sidious.
It isn't a huge surprise that Kylo Ren will be the one to find Palpatine in Star Wars Episode 9. After all, Kylo might already be looking for guidance from someone powerful in the Dark Side of the Force after his embarrassing defeat in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
However, the interesting part about their first meeting is that it could happen within the first 20 minutes of The Rise of Skywalker. This means that Kylo may already be under the influence of the Emperor by the time he faces off against Rey in their climactic fight in the third act.
Although we already know that Kylo Ren will be the one to find Palpatine, it is still unclear who will be the one who will ultimately defeat him. Will Kylo turn against the Emperor, or will Rey take the glory? The truth will be revealed when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
