This Is Us Season 4 Episode 4 will take a closer look at Beth's teen story. More mother-daughter drama is coming up this season as Beth's mom will come to visit the Pearsons in their new home in Philadelphia and somehow, Carol and Randall will clash about something.
Just as Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), and the kids are settling pretty well into their new home, a potential problem is coming their way. It's Beth's mother, Carol Clarke (Phylicia Rashad). The retired teacher will visit the Pearson family in Philly.
In the teaser for This Is Us Season 4 Episode 4, Randall blows his top when Carol tells Beth that they should reschedule an event. But Carol's suggestion did not land right on the new councilman.
"Don't tell me what I can and can't do Carol," Randall said when Carol lays out what they should do.
Randall could have lost temper because of problems at his office or probably having a hard time looking for a secretary. However, his problem with Carol seems to have started even before he and Beth got married.
It looks like there has been a tension between Randall and Carol since No. 3 and Beth are in college. In the same teaser for Episode 4, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Carol meet when they visit their children in college in the flashback scene.
Young Beth (Rachel Naomi Hilson) tells her mother that she and Randall (Niles Fitch) had a date but she thinks their relationship will never go beyond that. Carol tells Beth that it is for the better as Beth should focus on her studies rather than on boys.
From what viewers have known about Carol in the previous season, she has an overbearing personality. She would like to see Beth succeed so she might do something to keep the boys, including Randall, at bay.
Meanwhile, Kevin (Justin Hartley) also reflects on his past in the upcoming This Is Us Episode 4. No. 1 had attended an AA meeting with Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne) in the previous episode where he also saw Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison). Kevin opened up about how he keeps himself sober after his relapse when Kate's (Chrissy Metz) son, Jack, was born.
It seems like Kevin will be more serious about his sobriety especially now that he has a new sober buddy. He is expected to be more open about his past, possibly with Cassidy.
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. Episode 4 will be available on October 15.
