One of the most significant hacks for iPhones this year has finally arrived in the form of checkra1n. Its arrival is big news for the community of hobbyists more popularly known as jailbreakers, who are fond of removing Apple’s control over devices. The release of the latest iOS hack is a testament of another iOS exploit that the Cupertino-based tech giant is still unable to fix or destroy.

In Sept. 2019, hacker and developer Axi0mX unveiled a new iOS hack called checkm8 that brings the possibility to jailbreak nearly every iPhone running on Apple’s A-series CPU up to A11 Bionic chip. A few days ago, the team released Checkra1n, the first-ever public jailbreak tool compatible with iPads and iPhones running in iOS 13. The significance of this latest Apple iOS hack is that the Cupertino-based tech giant will have a hard time to fix it.

This is because the fundamental vulnerabilities lie in the bootrom. This is the component of the processor that contains the preliminary lines of code executed by the processor as it turns on. Apple could not fix it because bootrom could not be patched as soon as the device leaves the factory, pointed out by the hacker who goes by the name Axi0mX. The exploit is called checkm8, which is used by the iOS hack Checkra1n and considered unpatchable because it is based on a hardware exploit. Simply put, Apple will never be able to patch it with any software update.

This is also the reason why the latest iOS hack is compatible with Apple iOS 13. The new iOS hack is also capable of almost every Apple device ranging between iPhone 5s and iPhone X or those running in iOS 12.3 and later. While the latest iPhone XR and XS models, as well as the iPhone 11 series, are not affected, it still means that millions of older iPhones can be jailbroken. The Checkra1n iOS hack is available in beta version and is also compatible with some iPad models, including iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the original iPad Air.

The latest jailbreaking tool utilizes a semi-tethered method that entails a computer to reload system mods at each reboot. For more information about the process, visit the official Checkra1n guides.
