A lawsuit was filed against Burger King on Monday by a vegetarian customer who claims that the company's new meatless burgers were contaminated with real meat. According to the customer, the company's Impossible Whoppers were contaminated with real meat because they were cooked on the same grills that were used for its traditional beef patty burgers.
The lawsuit, which is planned to be upgraded to a class-action suit, was filed by a man named Phillip Williams. The complainant claims that he bought the company's Impossible Burgers thinking that they were using pure plant-based meat alternatives.
Williams stated in his filing that he wouldn't have agreed to pay the premium price for the meatless burger had he known that they were "coated in meat by-products." The fake meat burger that Williams bought was from a drive-through at Burger King Restaurant in Atlanta.
Williams is seeking to claim damages from Burger King for himself and all other purchasers of the company's Impossible Whoppers in the United States. The lawsuit is also attempting to force an injunction that would force Burger King to disclose that it is cooking its traditional burgers and Impossible Whoppers on the same grills.
The exact amount of the damages Williams is seeking has not been disclosed. It is also not yet clear if other complainants have stepped forward to join in the proposed class-action suit against Burger King.
