Qualcomm has just revealed its Snapdragon 865 premium chipset alongside with the Snapdragon 765 that is expected to power mid-range Android handsets. Following the announcement, device makers said there would new flagship releases that will support the upcoming CPU with Nokia, Xiaomi, and Oppo leading the way.
As both mobile chipsets are designed with the full support of the 5G network, Android fans can expect that the planned flagship and mid-range deployments in 2020 will take full advantage of 5G that is touted to make superfast, although expensive, wireless connectivity.
In addition, Snapdragon 865 has been advertised to double the AI performance that was previously with its immediate predecessor, the Snapdragon 855. Such enhancement will be mostly reflected on users' overall experience with the camera and gaming prowess of handsets fired up the latest Qualcomm chipset, WCCFTech reported.
As for the Snapdragon 765, the chip will come integrated with an X52 modem that will translate to larger battery capacity (that also reads longer operating hours) and lower cost or a more affordable retail price.
The mid-range chipset, however, will not be as powerful as its flagship sibling, and the wireless connectivity will not be as stupid fast.
The Snapdragon 865 will be first experienced in a Xiaomi flagship handset that will be known as the Xiaomi Mi 10, according to 9to5Google. The Chinese device maker has indicated that the phone model will be out anytime in the first quarter of 2020, and it will be the device to debut the 865 monster capabilities.
Not to be outdone, Oppo, another OEM from China, said its flagship bet with the Snapdragon 865 under the hood would come out at around the same time.
"In 2020 Q1, OPPO will launch its flagship product using the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, together bringing a faster and superior 5G experience to users," the Chinese firm, which is among the top emerging smartphone players in the world, was reported as saying.
On the other hand, Nokia handsets, which HMD Global manufactures, with 5G capability is lined up in the more affordable segment of the market, meaning the phone models coming out from the company will rely heavily on Snapdragon 765.
"Our highest priority for 2020 is making 5G more accessible - bringing an affordable yet premium grade, future proof 5G experience for the best possible performance in NSA and SA networks with the Snapdragon 765 Mobile Platform," the Finnish company said.
Snapdragon 865 will be going against Apple's A13 Bionic chip, found on iPhones and iPads, and Huawei's Kirin 990, which powers the latter's flagship and select mid-range devices.
