Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is the fourth world's largest smartphone maker and is now in Japan, taking on Apple with its budget-friendly products. Xiaomi is now offering Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Android smartphone on Japan, which is available for pre-order and will start shipping on Dec. 16. The Chinese tech giant is also offering its connected fitness tracker, the Mi Smartband 4 wearable.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Android smartphone is now available for pre-order in Japan with a base price of $486 or 52,800 Japanese Yen. The Chinese smartphone maker takes pride in the handset's 108-megapixel high-resolution camera, 6.5-inch OLED display with curved edges, and a 5,260 mAh battery that can last more than a couple of days.

Along with the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 are other electronic products made by the Chinese tech giant. It includes the Mi Smart Band 4 wearable, a portable battery pack, a premium all-metal suitcase, and an induction rice cooker. The top Chinese smartphone maker next to Huawei is exploring eastward for opportunities to offset the recent plummet of share in China.

The company's China shipments made a 30% nosedive in the past quarter while its hardware sales in Europe and India grew. Xiaomi, however, is facing a steep uphill battle in Japan, where, aside from the shrinking smartphone market, is dominated by the Cupertino tech juggernaut Apple. Also, the country has a unique consumer preference that has maintained the relevance in the market of domestic brands like Fujitsu and Sharp.

Xiaomi is betting in the long run on worldwide commercialization of the 5G technology, which presumably will spike demands for mobile devices that can host an ultra-fast game and video streaming. The Chinese company is also planning to introduce ten 5G-enabled handset models in 2020, considering that most state-supported carriers in China are spending billions constructing networks. Smartphone shipments in Japan are estimated to drop about 10 percent to 27.6 million units for the entire year concluding in Mar. 2020 before it could rebound in the following year, Bloomberg notes.

It is predicted that 5G models will play a crucial role and will contribute around 2 million units to the entire shipment, according to MM Research. It is worth noting that Xiaomi is widening its product portfolio beyond smartphones to include everything as part of its effort to create an Internet of Things ecosystem, says Bloomberg.
