In search of a reliable point guard, the Minnesota Timberwolves want a hire that will be in for the long haul. Targeted by the team as next addition is reportedly Dennis Smith Jr., currently on the roster of the New York Knicks but likely on the trading block.

From the Dallas Mavericks, Smith jumped to New York last season, and the acquisition then proved a sound investment. The guard averaged 14.7 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in 21 games, and by any account was tagged a productive member of the Knicks.

It's a different story, however, for Smith, the ongoing season. His stats in 18 games were unimpressive, only averaging 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. Fadeaway World said it's quite clear Smith is not performing to expectations.

"Smith is struggling to stay in the rotation. Injuries and personal matters have gotten in the way of his potential as a player this season," the report noted.

The Knicks, in fact, have valid reasons to make Smith available to interested teams. He has issues on consistency and efficiency, so according to Bleacher Report, it will be beneficial for New York to move the guard where he could potentially flourish.

While the Knicks may not have the patience for Smith to get back into the groove, other NBA teams may just open a door for the former Mavericks. After all, Smith is only 22, and given the room to explore and grow, he can still get back to the top of his game.

"A change of scenery could be just what he needs to turn things around," per the same report from Fadeaway World.

Thankfully, the Timberwolves have expressed interest on the Knicks guard, who might be available provided the right offer is set on the table. But before making a move, Minnesota must unlock the mystery of what is the price to pay for Smith, who was the first-round pick in 2017.

And in turn, the Knicks will need to know what will they get in exchange should Smith gets to be shipped in New York.

But setting these concerns aside, for now, Smith could possibly find a home with the Timberwolves. He should be a perfect fit chiefly because Minnesota is a young team.

The Timberwolves count Jeff Teague as the starting point guard, but surely, Smith has a sweet landing spot waiting for him there. Two possible scenarios could happen for Smith in Minnesota, according to Bleacher Report.

One is the possibility of replacing Teague, who is expected to enter free agency next year. Or if Teague stays, "Smith would be a talented understudy to groom." Either way, he could end up a winner.
