Chelsea coach Frank Lampard seemed to aim a subtle dig at Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho for allowing players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah to leave the Blues during his time as the coach of the club. During their time at Stanford bridge, both players struggled under Mourinho, but have become top players in the Premier League. Lampard said Chelsea must be patient and stick with players unlike what happened in the past years.

Salah moved to Roma in 2016 and inked a £12 million before moving to Liverpool, where he won several Golden Boots and a Premier League Player of the Season recognition. Jose Mourinho sent Salah on loan to Roma before Antonio Conte decides to sell him. De Bruyne was not also able to establish himself at the club and moved to Wolfburg for £18 million.

De Bruyne then moved to Manchester City for £55 million, where he became one of the crucial figures in the club's back to back title victories. Frank Lampard made his recent statement ahead of the Chelsea Boxing Day clash with Southampton. Lampard, who played alongside both players seemed to make a comment related to them.

"If we're not patient and if we don't stick with the players, we might end up in a situation like we were before where absolute top, world-class players at this moment were at Chelsea when they were 20, 21 and managers didn't stick with them so much then," he said. "I'm in a position where I'm going to stick with them." it is a criticism usually leveled at Jose Mourinho, who previously denied he was the one who let Salah leave Chelsea, first on loan to Fiorentina then to Roma.

In 2014, Chelsea paid Basel for £11 million for the then 21 years old Salah. He moved to Liverpool in 2017, where he signed a £34 million deal. De Bruyne serves as the creative hub under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He was instrumental not only in the club's win in Premier League titles but also in FA Cup and three League Cups.
