Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world when they announced that they will be stepping down from being senior royals to focus more on their family and charities. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also revealed that they wish to be “financially independent” and live part-time in the UK and Canada.
Although Queen Elizabeth showed support to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision, she still has the last say regarding the things that the couple wanted before they go. As it turned out, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a couple of demands before the “Megxit.”
After announcing their decision, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s website stated that they would “carve out a progressive new role” and “adjust their working model.” But after their discussion with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Prince William, it was decided that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will completely step back from royal duties as of spring of 2020.
And because of that, the Palace revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were required to drop their HRH titles. However, the couple will still be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the time being, though this may change as part of their resignation. If that is the case, then the couple should rebrand themselves and change everything in their foundation, website, and social media accounts.
Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wished to step back from being senior royals, they still wish to “collaborate” with Queen Elizabeth. However, they were told that they can “no longer formally represent” Her Majesty in their new lives.
As for their home in Frogmore Cottage, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle pledged to repay the £2.4million that was spent during the refurbishing, using funds from the Queen via the Sovereign Grant. But the Buckingham Palace revealed in a statement that it will “remain their UK family home.” (Read their full demands here).
Meanwhile, in his talk at the dinner for Sentebale on Sunday night, Prince Harry said: “I hope that helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”
He then added that “The media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.”
