Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the long-awaited debut of Zion Williamson should happen this Jan. 22. Though he admits that he has had sleepless nights, one can only imagine the impact the top rookie of the 2019 NBA Draft will have in the New Orleans Pelicans' campaign.
"Honestly, I don't know if I'm going to get sleep," Williamson said in a report from ESPN. "I'll be too excited thinking about my first NBA game."
Williamson is set to suit up against the San Antonio Spurs in what will be his first official NBA regular-season game. He showed glimpses of what he could do in the offseason, overpowering the opposition. As far as playing minutes, the 19-year-old is likely to be on managed minutes. It remains that his weight remains an issue most know how injuries could get severe because of it.
Regardless if he plays extensively or not, Williamson seems to be fine with it. In fact, he is looking forward to playing alongside Brandon Ingram, another young star who has been putting up eye-popping numbers. The former Duke Blue Devil is awed by Ingram's performance so far and believes he is a definite All-Star in a Twitter post by @PelicansNBA.

A look at the NBA Western Conference standings sees the Pelicans sporting a 17-27 win-loss record. Mathematically, New Orleans has a shot at making it to the postseason wars. However, the scenario would change as far as how deep they can go. Assuming they catch the last bus to the NBA playoffs, they are likely to face either of the Los Angeles-based teams, Lakers, or Clippers.
Regardless, the future looks bright for the Pelicans if both Ingram and Williamson stay on board. Head coach Alvin Gentry has a young cast of stars that could develop in the coming years - unless another trade happens in the coming months.
For Williamson, critics remain doubtful about his durability. Being the second heaviest player in the NBA right now behind Boban Marjanovic, most feel he needs to trim down. At 6-foot-6, Williamson has a listed weight of 284-pounds, which allows him to bulldoze his way inside the paint. Related to this, there are some who question the effects of bringing down his weight with his style of play.
Regardless, Williamson will be the focus of hoop fans this coming Wednesday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The NBA universe will finally get to see just how awesome and phenomenal the 2019 Consensus National College Player of the Year really is.
