Thomas Markle still vividly remembers the time his daughter, Meghan Markle, was born. In an interview with Channel 5, the 75-year-old dad said that his daughter knocked him out the very first time he held baby Meghan in his arms.
Meghan's dad said that he was thrilled and could not be happier upon seeing his baby with Doria Ragland. He shared that, even then, he knew this daughter would be special as photos of the duchess as a child were aired in the documentary interview.
The Duchess of Sussex is not the first child of Thomas. Meghan has two older half siblings with his dad's first family. Her parents, however, divorced when she was still a child but Meghan lived with her father until she was 18 and before she worked in Hollywood.
Thomas said his mixed relationship with Meghan's mom was frowned upon during those days. The dad said that people would look at Doria and assume that she was the housekeeper a, which was never fair to his ex-wife.
The retired lighting director said that he actually feels for Doria around the royal family. He said that the royals do not know where to place her and Doria always looked like a deer in headlights whenever she is around them.
Thomas also recalled the time his daughter told him that she was dating a British prince. He didn't know what this meant in the same way that Meghan also confessed that she was naive a about the media scrutiny of someone in the royal family.
In October, Meghan confessed on television that she's been struggling with the negative press about her in the British media. This prompted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to file three lawsuits against the press.
In January, Prince Harry and Meghan decided that they would step back from their royal duties. They also wanted to live away from the London spotlight and raise their son in Canada.
The bombshell announcement rattled the palace for more than a week as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Harry, along with Prince Charles and Prince William, worked out a deal for the Sussexes new life. In the end, it was decided that Prince Harry and Meghan can start their life anew as private individuals in Canada. They will no longer be asked to work for the royal family.
Thomas said, however, he was embarrassed by his daughter's decision to leave the royals. He said that Prince Harry and Meghan had an obligation and he was disappointed that it turned out this way.
