Prince Philip was the Captain-General of the Royal Marines for until his retirement from his royal duties in 2017. Prince Harry assumed the rank as he was the top choice of the Duke of Edinburgh back then. But now that the Duke of Sussex has also stepped back from his royal duties, his grandfather has apparently picked his worthy replacement.

According to The Sun royal correspondent Brian Hoey, Prince Philip will wants his daughter Princess Anne to replace Prince Harry as Captain General. The Princess Royal has the right credentials as she is currently the Admiral Chief Commandant of the Royal Navy.

Hoey said that Prince Philip believes Princess Anne would be right for the role in the Marines as well. Additionally, Prince Philip is apparently disappointed that Prince Harry has quit this royal duty in just under two years.

However, the Duke of Sussex had no choice but to relinquish his military associations as this was the arrangement drawn by the senior royals. In mid-January, Queen Elizabeth met with Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry to discuss the transition of the Sussex royals into private life, after they've made public their plans to step back as senior royals.

Palace sources said that part of their new arrangement was that Prince Harry needed to give up his military appointments. This was on top of the agreement that he and Meghan Markle will no longer officially represent the Queen at royal engagements.

Prince Harry served the military for 10 years. Aside from his tour of duty in Afghanistan, Prince Harry was also the Honorary Air Commandant Royal Air Force Honington and Small Ships and Diving and the Royal Naval Command: Commodore in Chief.

It was said that Prince Harry treasured his time in the military because he was not treated like a royal and he felt he was doing something worthwhile with his life. Losing these distinctions are a major sacrifice, as per PJ Media.

Royal observers said that this was, in fact, an abdication, regardless if the word was never used. According to royal consultant Alastair Bruce, Prince Harry and Meghan had the opportunity to serve the royal family but they "essentially abdicated" their roles.

The couple are now living in Vancouver, Canada where they want to pursue commercial ventures and earn a private income. The Sussex royals also said that they hope to raise Archie as a private individual. They also lost their rights to be addressed as His/Her Royal Highnesses.
