Queen Elizabeth is one of the longest-reigning monarchs in history. She has been wearing the crown for 67 years, breaking the records continuously. Although there are rumors that she will abdicate the throne at 95 years old to give way to her son, Prince Charles, to lead the Commonwealth, it looks like it is still far from happening.
Her Majesty will once again make a couple of new records in the coming weeks. Currently, she overtakes Franz Joseph's, Emperor of Austria-Hungary, place as the fifth longest-reigning monarch in history for staying on the throne for 67 years and 355 days, Express.
In 34 days, she will become the fourth longest-reigning monarch, replacing K'inich Janaab Pakal, who ruled the Mayan city-state of Palenque for 68 years and 33 days. She will pass the milestone on March 3 when she is already reigning for 68 years and 34 days.
To become the longest-reigning monarch in history, Queen Elizabeth needs to stay on her seat for another four years and 112 days. King Louis XIV holds the top rank of the longest-reigning monarch in history, staying on the throne for 72 years and 110 days.
If Her Royal Highness wants to surpass this, she has to continue her reign until the summer of 2024. At the time, she will be 98 years old.
However, there are rumors Queen Elizabeth will step down at the age of 95. If she does so, she will only reign for 69 years, two months, and 15 days, making her the fourth longest-reigning monarch in history.
Her Royal Highness' royal engagement has been reduced year after year. Hence, the rumors about her plan to abdicate the throne in two years are getting strong.
According to Daily Mail Online, royal commentator Robert Jobson said that Queen Elizabeth is already considering to step down to make the crown's transition seamless. The monarch reportedly gives the matter serious consideration. If she makes it at 95 years old, she will allegedly consider passing the reign to Prince Charles.
"Her Majesty is mindful of her age and wants to make sure when the time comes, the transition of the Crown is seamless," Jobson explained. In fact, the Queen reportedly began a "period of transition" as Prince Charles takes on more responsibility in the monarchy.
Since 2011, Queen Elizabeth hasn't completed a long-haul state visit. Although Prince Charles said that there is only one sovereign at a time, it seems like they now have a dual monarchy with the ongoing transition.
