Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing for a club is a possibility that David Beckham, himself a football legend, can make happen. The English superstar now owns an MLS team and according to him, having the two will be an explosive scenario for the club and the league.
Miami will see action for the first time on March 1 and many are wondering if the club will be recruiting superstars like the team owner. Beckham said his club getting the best player available will be welcome.
"You really want the best players and if we have the opportunity to bring in players like Cristiano or Leo, I have such admiration for them as athletes, if we could bring those players in then great," The Sun reported the former Manchester United star as saying.
He added any of the big football stars in Europe opting to play in MLS will not be sorry, and more so if they choose to sign with Inter Miami.
"We've got great opportunities down in Miami," said Beckham, who also played for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
However, Beckham was quick to add that he is not rushing to stuff the club he co-owns with big names. The roster he sees in Miami consists of young and some experienced players, and they are ready to play, which is the most important thing.
The football legend said he is operating with the things he learned from Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary team manager for the Red Devils, who insisted that club signings have to be the right fit, no matter the stature.
"It's not about the biggest name or personality it's about who fits in best with the players. That's what we'll do. But, like I said, as an owner if you want to bring these players in then we have a great opportunity," Beckham explained.
The likelihood of Messi and Ronaldo teaming up for Inter Miami was initially proposed by former Everton star Adrian Heath, who now manages the Minnesota United in MLS. Heath said there were speculations the league could lure the Argentine and the Portuguese at some point.
And because of Beckham's high-profile and his friendship with the Juventus, Messi, and Ronaldo could pick Inter Miami.
"I keep hearing there will be a blockbuster signing at some stage - and Ronaldo and Messi are the names I hear most," the Mirror reported Heath as saying.
While already in their 30s, Messi and Ronaldo are still playing top-notch football, and the pair have so far defied the dreaded setting in of slowdown. In the current season, Ronaldo has already made 16 goals in all appearances for Juve, while Messi has netted 18 goals with 12 assists.
Heath said that Beckham and Miami plus the possibility of Messi and Ronaldo arriving in the future would be a huge boost for MLS, which "has the potential to become one of the top Leagues in the world."
