Last year, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan announced that the PS5 would arrive sometime in the holiday of 2020. It is the same release window that Microsoft eyes to release the rial Xbox Series X. A new report, however, claims that Sony is releasing not only the standard PS5 but also the more expensive and more powerful PS5 Pro this year.
PS5 Pro
The new report comes from NeoGaf userVFXVeteran, which strengthens earlier rumors that Sony would release both the PS5 and PS5 Pro this year. The tipster, who cites sources in the industry, claims that the PS5 Pro would match or exceed the 12 teraflops GPU count of the Xbox Series X. Moreover, the tipster reveals that the standard PS5 would be released with 9 teraflops GPU count.
In Dec. last year, Sony Interactive Entertainment Executive Vice President of Hardware Engineering and Operation Masayasu Ito hinted about the PS5 Pro in his interview with Game Informer. The executive talked about the life cycle of gaming consoles, which he noticed, is getting shorter because of the advances in technology. It also mentioned that the PS4 Pro was able to prolong the lifespan of the PS4 and hinted that it might do the same with the PS5.
From the Interview, Ito discussed that gaming consoles used to have a life span of between 7 and 10 years and later cut short to 6 or 7 years. He also predicted that the life cycle of the PS5 could be between six or seven years, but also suggested that it would require the company to integrate the latest advances in technology to release the PS5 Pro.
Ito's statement surfaced following earlier rumors that Microsoft is releasing a couple of next-generation gaming consoles. Last year, Microsoft's Project Scarlett was rumored to have a couple of consoles concealed under different code names. The more powerful one is reportedly called Anaconda, while the base unit is called Lockhart.
Other PS5 Details
Whispers about the PS5 Pro have been rife since last year. But, Sony, aside from Ito's statement, has not revealed any official information related to the more powerful next-generation gaming console. The Japanese gaming giant is anticipated to unveil the PS5 this month officially, but so far, there is no indication that it is happening.
Sony has already revealed the official logo and name of its next-generation gaming console. It has also launched the official website of the PS5. However, Sony earlier admitted that it is not yet ready to fully reveal the PS5.
