Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced back in January that they will be stepping down as senior royals to focus more on their family and charities. Although Queen Elizabeth supported their decision, the withdrawal was not done instantly.
In fact, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK to complete their final engagements as senior royals. Now, a royal commentator claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal exit “cleared the way” for Prince William and Kate Middleton to shine.
“We are, however sadly, where we are. It had been known for some time that Harry and Meghan had been unhappy with royal life and were seeking to change their roles,” Richard Fitzwilliams said. “William and Kate, the future King and Queen Consort know that the future ‘inner core’ of the royal family lies with them and with George and his siblings and their future families.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s popularity is undeniable and news about them, good or bad, sometimes overshadowed the works of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Now that they are turning their backs on royal life, Richard Fitzwilliams believes that the future King and Queen consort will get the spotlight that they deserve.
“Prince William’s sincerity and personal charm are matched by Kate's beauty, poise and her undoubted commitment to her charities, especially those involving helping children,” he shared. “These involve children's mental health and emotional resilience and combating childhood trauma. She is a global fashion icon too.”
The royal expert then noted that “Harry and Meghan's departure clears the way for William and Kate, who are devoted to their royal duties, to shine in the global spotlight.”
Meanwhile, Novelist Dame Hilary Mantel said that leaving the royal family was the best option for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The author pointed out that the former actress was “too good” for the “dull” Royal Family and would’ve left alone without her husband if Queen Elizabeth didn’t permit their exit.
“I’m pleased that it’s the marriage that’s surviving and the connection with the monarchy that has to go because I think almost all of us would have bet that if she [the Duchess of Sussex] left, she’d have to leave alone,” she said. “Though, none of us know the details of how this is going to work out. I think that Meghan was too good to be true. She was a smiling face in a dull institution, she cheered the nation up no end, or at least men and women of goodwill.”
