Prince William is next to his father in the line of succession to the British throne. Although there are earlier rumors that the Duke of Cambridge seems to be reluctant of his role, his father, Prince Charles, is confident that the monarchy will be in good hands now that his firstborn son prepares for his role as the future king.
The monarchy has been shaken to its very core with all the crises it has been through from the last part of 2019 to the start of 2020. There are Prince Andrew's huge scandal over his friendship with the criminal sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the shocking bombshell announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to step down as senior royals.
However, with the help of Queen Elizabeth II and other senior members of the royal family, Prince Charles manages to hold his family together during a turbulent year. He also assures that his relationship with the Duke of Sussex remains rock-solid, despite their decision to leave the Firm. The Prince of Wales also helped his mother with his brother's controversy after his car-crash Newsnight interview.
But just like any leader, Prince Charles also worries about the future of the monarchy, especially when the time comes that Prince William has to take the crown. In an article royal author Katie Nicholl wrote in Vanity Fair in February, Kate Middleton's husband was said to have "struggled with the notion of kingship" in the past.
He was even dubbed as a "reluctant royal" after having fewer engagements than that of Queen Elizabeth in 2015. There was also a time when Prince Charles was reportedly hurt when his eldest refused to take over the Prince's Trust that made him worried about the monarchy's future.
But now, Prince William managed to redeem himself when he stepped up his game after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals. The Duke of Cornwall then returns his faith to his son and respects and admires the work he and his wife do with the Royal Foundation.
"[William] is a respected statesman in the making and a vital and hard-working ambassador for the Queen and the Royal Family," Nicholl said. "Sources who know him say he is ready for the next chapter in his life as he prepares to succeed his father as the next Prince of Wales."
So when will Prince William take the throne? According to Insider, when Queen Elizabeth dies, the throne will automatically go to Prince Charles. But, if Charles dies before his mother, William will directly inherit the crown.
