Canelo Saul Alvarez has reportedly agreed to face Gennady Golovkin for a trilogy although the fight date will still depend on the coronavirus outbreak. With the boxing world part of the sporting world in pause, the only thing certain is that both boxing icons will be facing each other at some point in the future.
According to The Athletic, the camps of Alvarez and Golovkin have been working on something but were unauthorized to speak. One reason behind that is that the Mexican Brawler was originally set to face Billy Joe Saunders on May 2 in a super middleweight unification fight. But with the pandemic, even that is likely to be moved to a later date.
Saunders will likely be Alvarez's tuneup fight before facing Golovkin for a third time. The Mexican will be in for a tough fight although critics favor Alvarez to prevail over Saunders. Alvarez is expected to bully his way against the British pug. Aware that this is likely to be Alvarez's game plan, Saunders will need to use his footwork to elude the charge of the Mexican Brawler. If he fails, Oddshark.com sees a knockout win by Alvarez.
Golovkin is expected to monitor that match as he tries to regroup and exact revenge for losing the last time out. GGG lost to Alvarez on Sept. 15, 2018, via majority decision, losing the WBA Super, WBC, and IBO middleweight titles. The Kazakh destroyer has since picked up consecutive wins against Steve Rolls and Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
According to boxingscene.com, the Alvarez vs. Saunders tiff was postponed at least until June. However, that too is subject to change, depending on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The fight is set to be held at the MGM Grand. MGM Resorts has suspended all events and operations due to the coronavirus pandemic for now, yet another factor that could determine the fight date.
For now, Alvarez and Saunders will have to place their training on hold - another thing that could factor heavily when they face each other. Both are confident of winning the bout but Alvarez has a lot on the line, particularly a lucrative payday when he and Golovkin clash for the third time. Though favored, an Alvarez loss could delay a trilogy fight. A rematch will likely be prioritized, meaning Golovkin will just have to wait. There are complications to Alvarez-Golovkin III and the coronavirus pandemic is not helping.
