Billy Joe Saunders was supposed to get the biggest fight of his life on May 2, facing Canelo Saul Alvarez in a blockbuster bout. But the fight originally set for Cinco de May weekend is expected to be pushed back with the whole world now trying to find answers in containing and curing the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
A possible new fight date would see it moved to either June or July. But unless something positive is done in containing the coronavirus, even that is an uncertainty. Also, Saunders may find himself demoted in terms of Alvarez's next opponent. The camp of the Mexican Brawler has reportedly agreed to face Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy match and there is a chance that this could push through ahead of Saunder's clash with Alvarez, The Athletic reported.
If that is the case, Saunders is unlikely to have a say. But looking at it differently, the change in schedule could work in his favor. The English pug claims that he has Alvarez figured out and believed he has already reached his peak, Boxingscene.com reported. He sees no more room for improvement and further studying the Mexican could work to his advantage.
"For me, it's all about winning. I really do rate him, I think that he's a brilliant fighter, he's complete, but the thing is - I believe that we've seen the best of him. We haven't seen the best of me yet. I have seen the absolute best of him, the Golovkin fight twice, the Danny Jacobs fight, he's not going to get any better than that," Saunders said.
Regardless of what Saunders thinks, he remains an underdog against Alvarez. Most feel that the Mexican's strength and experience in the ring will be too much for the 30-year-old to handle. And if there is one thing that Saunders can use to negate that, it would be his wits and speed.
Alvarez's only loss was against Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013. It would be ideal for Saunder to study what the American boxer did although there are other things to consider. One is that Alvarez has matured since then and has grown even stronger through the years.
It may be an uphill battle for Saunders to deal Alvarez only his second boxing career loss. With most discouraged to go out to avoid contracting the COVID-19 disease, Saunders may want to stay home and further study Alvarez in preparation for their clash - whenever that may be.
