It looks like the wait for Wonder Woman 1984 just got a lot longer. The highly anticipated sequel starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince was already scheduled for release in June after being pushed back repeatedly in 2019. Sadly, the DC Extended Universe flick has become the latest major film to fall victim to the Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) shutdowns. Warner Bros. has just announced that it is delaying the premiere of the second Wonder Woman to August.

It's no secret that Wonder Woman 1984 is long overdue. Although the film wrapped up filming in 2018 and post-production was completed early, Warner Bros. decided to hold off on its premiere until December 2019. The studio then opted to move it to an earlier release date in November 2019 to avoid competing with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, another decision was made ultimately giving the sequel a June 2020 premiere.

At first, it seemed like Wonder Woman 1984 would finally be sticking to its June 2020 release date. Unfortunately, it has once again encountered another major problem. COVID-19 has been declared a global pandemic and several nations have decided to impose a mandatory self-quarantine that would force theaters to close down for several weeks. With cinemas closing their doors, Warner Bros. has decided to postpone the premiere of the Gal Gadot film in an official statement.

"When we greenlit Wonder Woman 1984, it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14," Warner Bros. head Toby Emmerich said in a statement (via Variety). "We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then."

Interestingly, there have been speculations that Wonder Woman 1984 would be set for a digital release and end up being aired on the Warner Bros. streaming service. However, it is clear that the studio is determined to give the movie the theatrical release it deserves.

Wonder Woman 1984 is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, the Amazonian princess turned superhero. The sequel will also bring back Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, who was previously killed in the first movie. The film will also introduce Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva aka Cheetah as well as The Mandalorian actor Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord.

Wonder Woman 1984 will hit theaters on August 14.
