People already have certain expectations when it comes to Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). For instance, fans are already looking forward to Harley Quinn gathering an awesome girl gang to take on the thugs of Gotham City. But, will the upcoming DC Extended Universe flick also feature a queer villain? Ewan McGregor and co-star Chris Messina may have confirmed that Roman Sionis aka Black Mask will have a relationship with fellow baddie Victor Zsasz.

There have been speculations about the relationship between Roman Sionis and Victor Zsasz since it was announced that Ewan McGregor will play the former in Birds of Prey. However, it was never actually confirmed that the two villains would be in a relationship. Nevertheless, this has been strongly suggested by most of photos and trailers for the Warner Bros. film. In adition to that, McGregor has somehow been teasing about Roman's sexuality whenever he discusses the character's role in the movie.

But has Ewan McGregor just confirmed that Black Mask is actually queer? The Trainspotting actor recently attended the Birds of Prey Harlywood exhibit in Hollywood with co-star Chris Messina where they were both asked by Variety about the relationship between their characters. Interestingly, McGregor initially tried to play coy about it.

"It's very complicated," Ewan McGregor said. "Their relationship is very much based...there's a want and a need in there for sure." Fellow Birds of Prey actor Chris Messina then added that "there's like a real love of anarchy" between their characters. "More than likely, yes," McGregor concluded before he and Messina began laughing.

So does this mean Roman Sionis and Victor Zsasz are truly queer? Unfortunately, the answer from Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina doesn't really confirm anything. Interestingly, their response has since been critcized by fans who believe that the Birds of Prey actors are simply "queerbaiting" their audience.

For now, there is no clear answer about Black Mask's sexuality. Fans will need to watch the film this February to be sure.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is directed by Cathy Yan and also stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Laurel Lance aka Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. The movie will premiere on February 7.
