Timo Werner has been on the radar of several football teams mainly because he has become one of the most prominent frontmen in Europe. Among the teams expressing interest in the German are Liverpool and Bayern Munich, heavyweights that can only get better if they acquire the 24-year-old striker. However, German coach Dietmar Hamann feels that any move that Werner decides on needs careful deliberation.
Joining either Liverpool or Bayern would be fitting if Werner is content solely on winning and possibly collecting trophies. But with both teams oozing with talent, the 24-year-old may end up wasting his talent according to Hamann.
Like in the case of The Reds, Hamann cannot picture how Werner would fit in the first team with established players like Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane around. There is also Roberto Firminho who is a bit underrated but does do damage for Liverpool F.C.
“Where’s he going to play? Even if Mane or Salah go, [then] out wide is not his position and the center-forward position, the way they do play, is probably the most crucial one," Harman said in an interview with The Athletic Steilcast podcast. “Firmino is probably a bit underrated in some people's eyes. He’s a ball-playing center-forward, he probably doesn’t get the goals that other players get but he brings other players into position and that’s certainly not Werner’s game, so [it’s] a no from me.”
The case is not that different if Werner were to land in Bayern. He would have to contend with Robert Lewandowski. Hence, the interest that Han-Dieter Flick has on Werner befuddles Hamann although the manager could have other plans on why he is taking in another striker.
Regardless of what Hamann thinks, it appears a move to Liverpool is more or less a done deal for Werner. Another team who tried to make a play for the German striker is Inter Milan. But the effort may have come a bit too late with the Reds bent on acquiring Werner.
If that is the case, the only thing left right now is the arrangement between Leipzig and Liverpool. If The Reds don't have space for Werner, there is a chance he could be put on loan. Either way, the thing here is that Liverpool would hold the rights to him - something that could turn out to be more of an investment in youth with options to either use or sell him in the future.
