Businesses are embracing technology more than ever to make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. Industries of the many kinds are now making use of project management platforms and video-conferencing tools to allow remote work options.

People are also learning to adapt to the new normal. Schools are now offering virtual learning models and grocery stores are shifting to a more modern approach and promoting online grocery shopping.

These are all possible because of the re-introduction of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). These technologies have existed for quite a while now, but more businesses are realizing its importance as the need to survive the health crisis is crucial.

AR in the Retail Industry

Even before the coronavirus struck the whole world, online shopping had been a big part of our lives already. But isn't it true that we still visit brick-and-mortar stores so we can see the product for ourselves?

In-person trips are no longer an option these days and businesses get this. The only choice available now is to either innovate or die.

IKEA is one good example of a company that's taking advantage of AR. It has an AR app that allows customers to see what a piece of furniture will look like in their homes. There's even a "visual search" feature on the app. A customer merely has to tap his screen to select a piece of non-IKEA furniture and the app will do the task of searching something similar in IKEA's database.

Many stores have gone AI as well, allowing their customers to see what they'd look like wearing a particular piece of accessory or clothing without trying it on in person. Shoppers can also easily find the perfect shade of nail polish or lipstick before hitting add to cart.

VR Events and Conferences

The tradeshow industry is suffering tremendously due to stay-at-home and quarantine guidelines. With conferences and exhibitions being canceled left and right, other industries are suffering a loss too, including airlines, restaurants, and hotels.

However, VR technology has enabled many companies to still hold events. Now, people will be able to join conferences, albeit virtually.

Another advantage of VR shows is that fans from other countries can join in too. It eliminates having to spend a whole lot on fares, meals, and other expenses. In turn, companies will remain relevant and unforgotten.

These days, digitization is no longer optional. The coronavirus has forced us to adapt to the abrupt changes and we can all survive if we open our minds to technological innovations.
