Bestselling author Emily Giffin didn't mince her words when she criticized Meghan Markle's video with her son, Archie Harrison. The writer of Something Borrowed said that the Duchess of Sussex "seemed so unmaternal" as she read Archie a book for his first birthday. The video was uploaded on Instagram for charity.
In a screen-captured post, Giffin was shown, having an exchange with other royal fans in the comments on Instagram. The author said that Meghan appeared to be annoyed that Archie was not cooperating with her. She also questioned why the Duchess of Sussex released a video of Archie.
"You want privacy for your child so you put out a video (by your authorized biographer) of him?" Giffin said. "Why didn't she film and let Harry read? And why didn't she take the moment at the end to say 'He said daddy!' Because that would make it about Harry for a split second," she ranted.
Giffin's comments, however, received some backlash leading her to issue an apology. Some of her followers said that the author appears to have a problem with Meghan's racial identity, which she denied.
Instead, Giffin said in a now-private Instagram post that she was sorry for the negative impact of her comments against Meghan. She acknowledged that her post was mean-spirited and she understood why it can be misconstrued with racial undertones.
The author admitted that, as a royalist, she was bothered by Meghan and Prince Harry's departure from their royal roles. According to UsWeekly, Giffin was actually obsessed with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2017, which gave her an idea to write a royal-themed novel.
Meanwhile, after Giffin dubbed Meghan as phony, Hollywood superstar Jennifer Garner wrote a sweet note to the Duchess of Sussex. She thanked Meghan for sharing Archie to the world and for letting the public celebrate his first birthday through the video.
As the ambassador of Save the Children, which was responsible for sharing Meghan and Archie's video, Garner also thanked Prince Harry's wife for choosing the charity to mark Archie's special day.
Garner said that Meghan and Archie's video, as well as the story she read to her son, gave the public a "joyful and meaningful shift in perspective." The actress said that it was uplifting to watch the duchess lovingly talk to her son as she showed him what was in the book.
