Angelina Jolie's relationship with her father, actor Jon Voight, can be compared to those of many married couples: there are many highs and lows. At the moment, it is unclear where their relationship stands after the Maleficent actress seemed to have thrown shade on Voight in her latest essay for Mother's Day.
In her piece for The New York Times, Jolie paid tribute to her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, whom she lost in 2007. The Tomb Raider actress described Bertrand as her "protective blanket" who also loved rock songs.
Jolie said after her father had an affair, her mother changed. The actress was only two when her parents got divorced.
"It set her dream of family life ablaze. But she still loved being a mother. Her dreams of being an actor faded as she found herself, at the age of 26, raising two children with a famous ex who would cast a long shadow on her life," Jolie wrote.
The mother-of-six actress noted that after she had gone through some heartbreaks of her own and seeing her children growing up, she has begun to rediscover her mother's spirit. She said Bertrand never lost her grace and smile even after her divorce from Voight.
For the most part of Jolie's life, she has an estranged relationship with her father. In a 2004 interview, Jolie admitted that she and the Transformers actor were not on speaking terms.
The Salt actress said after she and her father had their final argument, she thought that was the last but it wasn't. They were back to the same relationship they had before, which Jolie said unhealthy and she was not comfortable with.
The two tried to repair their relationship when Bertrand passed away from ovarian cancer in 2007. Jolie and Voight started to talk to each other again in 2010. Apparently, it was Brad Pitt who convinced Angelina to reconcile with her father.
However, when Jolie and Pitt got married in 2014 at their Château Miraval estate in France, Voight was MIA in his daughter's wedding. Then after Angelina filed for divorce from Brad, Voight was there again.
In one interview, the Ray Donovan actor was asked about his daughter and he said Jolie was doing okay. He added that he was looking forward to spending Christmas with his grandchildren, suggesting that he and his daughter were talking again. In May 2017, Voight, Jolie, and four of her children were spotted having dinner together.
All of these prove that the father and daughter have a complicated relationship. Nobody knows what's the status of their bond at the moment other than them.
