The Apple Watch introduces a wide range of health features that would only increase over time. Interestingly, it looks like the Cupertino tech giant is planning to introduce some of that functionality to the next generation AirPods, according to a new report. It appears that Apple might include Ambient Light Sensors in future AirPods models to expand its features and include health monitoring functionalities to the pair of wireless earbuds.

The new information about the inclusion of Ambient Light Sensors on future generation AirPods comes from a new report released by Digitimes as picked up by Macrumors. According to the Taiwan-based tech publication, the Cupertino tech giant is considering integrating light sensors on the upcoming models of AirPods, which might arrive in a year or two.

The report suggests that the light sensors on future Apple AirPods could be a part of the heavily speculated health monitoring features coming to Apple's wireless earbuds. Taiwan's ASE Technology would reportedly handle the backend process for the latest component, the report adds. It cites that several industry sources revealed that the company already purchased additional packaging machines for this project.

While the latest report from Digitimes does not say about the purpose of ambient light sensors on future Apple AirPods, Macrumors cites another report from the Taiwan-based publication revealing that these sensors would be a part of the wireless earbuds' biometric measurements. The report claims that ASE Technology has combined SiP with integrated AI design for truly wireless stereo gears.

This enables the devices to track step counts, heart rates, and health conditions. It could also perform intelligent translation and sense head motions, Digitimes reports citing industry sources. At present, these kinds of functionalities are present in the current generation Apple Watch.

The smart wearable from Apple is also expected to introduce new health apps like sleep tracker, panic attack gauge, and blood oxygen level measurement. While the report says that these health features could arrive in a year or two on Apple AirPods, there is a high possibility that some models might feature some of these health features. Future models could likely feature all of these health monitoring apps too.

It is worth mentioning that Digitimes reported in the early part of 2019 that Apple would launch the next generation AirPods equipped with various health monitoring features. It claimed that the model would arrive in the second half to 2019. However, the Cupertino-based tech giant introduced the second-generation AirPods in Mar 2019 without the smart health monitoring features. In other words, while Digitimes has its fair share of accurate reports, it is safer to take this information with a pinch of salt and skepticism.
