This year hasn't been great for Ellen DeGeneres. Aside from being forced to broadcast her show at home because of COVID-19 pandemic, the TV host has been receiving backlash for the past couple of months. The most recent was when she gave her mother a birthday gift quarantine haircut.

On DeGeneres' mother Betty's 90th birthday, Ellen decided to give her a haircut by herself. The comedian grabbed trimmers to cut her mom's hair but not many approved Ellen's action.

Ellen posted on Instagram the video of their hairstyling session, and many were not pleased with what the TV host did to her mom's hair. In the video which she captioned, "90th birthday present for my Mama," Betty was seen seemingly protesting to her daughter's plan. But Ellen promised her mom that she will just cut the edges off and she has nothing to worry about.

The Finding Dory actress was seen giving her mom a haircut using trimmers. The video then cuts to Betty sitting in the same chair, but with noticeably less hair.

Ellen asked her mom if she likes her new hairstyle. Betty said she was not sure until she saw herself in the mirror. She was shocked when she found out that Ellen cut her hair really short.

It was a hilarious mother-daughter moment but to many social media users, it was otherwise. Some even called it "elder abuse." Another accused Ellen of using her mother for publicity and added that she did not cut her mother's hair; she shaved it. Some said the clip showed how control freak the Emmy-winning host is.

Meanwhile, others are less mean and defended Ellen. Many said Betty looked like she was up to whatever her daughter was planning, probably because she knows that whatever the outcome will be, she will eventually have her old hairstyle back in just a few weeks.

Others noted that spending time with her daughter on her 90th birthday was probably the best present Betty could have asked for, especially this time that many couldn't be with their family. Some also mentioned that hair salons are mostly closed at this time. Hence, having a haircut from Ellen wouldn't be that bad after all.

Meanwhile, Betty also received birthday greetings from A-list Hollywood celebrities through Ellen's post on IG. Among the celebs that greeted Betty were Justin Bieber, Dwayne Johnson, Mario Lopez, Jake Gyllenhaal, and more.

This is not the first time this year that people criticized Ellen DeGeneres. A few months ago, she was tagged as "one of the meanest people alive."

YouTuber Nikkie de Jager, who goes by NikkieTutorials, also revealed that DeGeneres "cold and distant" during her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellen's show crew members also accused the host of not communicating with them about their payment during the coronavirus shutdown.
