Microsoft is very aggressive in marketing its next-generation gaming console. Additionally, it seems bullish in terms of the backward compatibility feature of the Xbox Series X. While Sony has remained tight-lipped in terms of the backward compatibility feature of the PS5, it looks like that it is now sharing some crucial details about it.

Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment shared that its next-generation gaming console would be able to play the majority of the over 4,000 PS4 titles. It sounds impressive, but what if your favorite game is not included in the list of backward compatible PS4 games? Sony is aware of this weakness, considering that Microsoft is advertising how massive the games' library the Xbox Series X could play.

A recent report released by Eurogamer shared that Sony Interactive Entertainment has released private guidance to developers that the site has seen. It revealed that the Japanese gaming giant told game developers that any PS4 game submitted for certification must be compatible with the PS5 gaming console. This report aligns with another report released by Gameindustry.biz, who interviewed Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan.

But, the Sony executive said in the interview that the PS5 would have titles that could not play on the current generation PS4 consoles. Based on a document released by Sony to game developers, any title submitted after Jul 13, 2020, would not any issues running on the PS5. In other words, PS5 would offer the same features that the current generation gaming console gives to the title.

However, it is worth mentioning that the date of submission for certification is different from the game's release date. Certification takes a long time before the game developers could achieve it. Every gaming console in the past decades has been practicing this. It is worth mentioning that Microsoft and Sony are going into great lengths to develop new system architectures that provide a bridge between the old generation and new generation gaming consoles.

Theoretically speaking, Sony Interactive Entertainment could roll out games playable on both current-generation gaming consoles PS4 and PS4 Pro, and next-generation gaming console the PS5. Microsoft has been very vocal about the same strategy, which it hopes to achieve at least in the first couple of years following the release of the Xbox Series X. Sony's boss Jim Ryan, in an interview said that he would like PS5 fans to experience something new and different that only PS5 fans could enjoy.
