In the past, the gaming industry has seen reports that the PS5 might feature a gaming cartridge, which could be a game-changing attribute for Sony's next-generation gaming console. Recently, the Japanese gaming console maker filed a trademark suggesting that it is working on a cartridge-like device, which other fans presumed related to the forthcoming PS5. It is a general knowledge that Sony's next-generation gaming console would use a Blu-ray drive and back digital downloads, underlining that what this trademark filing means is yet to be revealed.

A Sony document at the US Patent and Trademark Office underlines that it is working on a game cartridge. The patent was published on Jun 2, 2020. it can be recalled that in 2019, the Japanese gaming console maker also patented a cartridge device allegedly for the PS5.

However, it turned out that based on several sources, the cartridge device could be a storage platform. The recent patent filed by Sony is a unique one and looks like it is an individual piece of device. The patent describes the device as a game cartridge, but it is interesting that Sony already confirmed that the PS5 would use the Blu-ray drive.

Earlier rumors claimed that the Japanese gaming console maker might introduce the game cartridge to the pS5. However, based on the recent Sony document, the patent has nothing to do with the PS5 since it does not mention the next generation gaming console. This leads other fans to speculate that the patent could be about a new stand-alone plug and play device.

According to Gamerant, the new patent may be for a device that uses cartridges to change games. It would take some time before the industry would learn about this recent patent filed by Sony. Meanwhile, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan recently shared in an interview some details about the PS5.

The CEO said that Sony's next-generation gaming console uses advanced picture quality technology that impacts its cost. But, he pointed out that this technology is essential to achieve a more realistic picture effect. He also acknowledged that this is a hard time to expect massive sales for the PS5.

Ryan, however, sounds optimistic that despite the coronavirus's challenges, the gaming industry might be one of the sectors to benefit from the recent crisis since people treat games as past time outlets. Sony confirmed that the PS5 gaming console is arriving sometime in the holiday of 2020.
