When the next iPhone series is released, the expectation is Apple will use the latest 5G modem for the handsets, likely sourcing the component from Qualcomm. Possibly taking the label iPhone 12, the 2020 iOS flagship models are thought to be equipped with a Snapdragon modem that is manufactured on 5nm node.
That being the case, it can be assumed that Apple's target 5G modem is the Snapdragon X60, which according to Qualcomm will boast of powerful wireless connectivity and lower latency. And compared to the Snapdragon X55, which is available now, the Snapdragon X60 is touted to be more power-efficient but with a smaller footprint.
It's easy to see while the Snapdragon X60 is favored by the Cupertino-based tech giant, according to WCCFTech. The modern features that the 5G modem will bring fit well with the iPhone blueprint. The plan is for the next iPhone to be jammed with power and speed but as always, Apple would want the new devices to be gorgeous and slim.
However, and as hinted already, the Snapdragon X60 is not yet in the market. Per the same report, Qualcomm's rollout plan for the 5G modem points to a likely debut in 2021, which runs in counter to Apple's release calendar.
The iPhone 12, should there be no disruption on Apple's supply chain and manufacturing areas, will be pushed out in the second half of 2012 so waiting out for Qualcomm will only delay the release of the new models. Certainly, that is not an option for the company so the next best thing is to go for the Snapdragon X55 and use the sequel for the 2021 installment of Apple's flagship handset.
In any case, there is no stopping Apple from starting the work on the next iPhone and the same report claimed that mass assembly of the device will commence this June. For the iPhone 12 production activity, TSMC, Apple's longtime manufacturing partner, will still be on the lead.
Fans can still expect the upcoming series in four versions and each model will be the direct replacement for the iPhone 11 that came out in 2019.
According to MacRumors, the next iPhone design will largely mirror what was seen with the existing series. If the leaked CAD images of the new family will prove correct, the wide notch that was introduced with the iPhone X will remain.
The build of the device, however, is expected to be revised and will draw inspiration from the industrial cut that was seen with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. It is believed that the next iPhone chassis will be the smaller version of the iPad Pro.
The next iPhone will unbox in four flavors powered by an A14 SoC, and buyers can choose from a 6.7-inch display, a 5.4-inch screen, and a 6.1-inch option that will come out in two variants.
