Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are two of the most popular members of the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex didn’t only merge the worlds of the royal and the commoner, they also joined the U.K. and the U.S. together.
In her documents filed against the Associated Newspapers, Meghan Markle claimed that her royal wedding with Prince Harry provided an economic boost for Britain. The Duchess of Sussex argued that the Royal Family and U.K. taxpayers benefitted from her 2018 nuptials by £1billion.
One royal expert believes that Meghan Markle’s claim is her way to show her “superstar status.” The Duchess of Sussex seemingly made sure to point out that the Royal Family was not the only one that benefitted from her royal wedding, but also the country.
In the court filings, Meghan Markle shared her discontent for being banned for using her and Prince Harry’s HRH titles or their Sussex Royal brand after their exit. She argued that royals like Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, and Prince Michael of Kent use their royal titles for their work.
Meghan Markle’s argument seemed to contradict her “superstar status” claim. The three royals that she mentioned are minor royals. Meaning, the Duchess of Sussex sees herself at their level. But at the same time, she claimed that her royal wedding boosted up the economy.
“So, on the one hand, you’re saying that ‘I'm like these minor royals, I wasn't necessarily a senior member of the working family… And then, on the other hand, you’re saying, ‘I’m a big superstar,’” Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers said earlier this month.
Myers, also, pointed out that Meghan Markle’s filings have drifted away from the core of the lawsuit. The whole thing started because of an article that showed part of the Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 letter to her estranged father Thomas Markle, which she claimed is a privacy breach.
However, Meghan Markle’s other accusations are driving a bigger wedge between the Sussexes and the Royal Family. Meghan’s legal team claimed that she was “unprotected by the Institution and prohibited from defending herself.”
In the documents, Meghan Markle’s friends were, reportedly, worried about her welfare, especially because she was pregnant at the time. But, one senior royal source is not only denying the Duchess of Sussex’s claims, but they are branding them “ridiculous.”
Another one called the allegations “inaccurate” and “total rubbish” while the third source said that Meghan Markle’s claims are “fiction and galling."
