Only one iPhone 12 model will feature support for the fastest 5G technology, according to a new report. The mmWave 5G network will only be available to the largest iPhone 12 version. The report also claimed that the iPhone 12 Pro Max with mmWave 5G support would only be available to three regions.

While all iPhone 12 will feature 5G support, a recent report from Fast Company revealed that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the only model in this year's flagship iPhone that would ship with mmWave 5G support. Only the top tier iPhone 12 model comes with a room for the battery antenna required for the fast millimeter-wave 5G, the report said. The bigger battery size would also support the technology considering that the faster 5G connection would draw more power, the report added.

Aside from the technology being exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the report also claimed that it would only be available to three regions. These are Japan, South Korea, and the United States. In the U.S., only Verizon is the only telecom company heavily invested in deploying 5G while T-Mobile is currently working on the sub-6GHz frequency.

The report also claimed that the Cupertino company might launch an iPhone 12 4G model in 2021. The said device is the alleged update of the recently launched iPhone SE. Earlier, the publication reported that Apple would use a LiDar scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Currently, 5G technology is still young and is still making its way to being the standard in various markets and regions. mmWave 5G travels at a high-frequency spectrum, which is between 24 GHz and 39 GHz. It delivers download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) and at times beyond that.

One weakness of mmWave 5G technology is that it has trouble penetrating objects. This includes buildings and walls. It is also expensive for carriers to launch compared to a lower-frequency service like 4G or sub-6GHz 5G. Meanwhile, the sub-6GHz 5g service uses a lower frequency spectrum under 6GHz, thus the name.

This kind of 5G technology delivers speeds almost similar to a good 4G connection. In a recent study conducted by OpenSignal, it discovered that the average 5G download speed in the U.S is about 51 Mbps while the average 4G download speed is around 29 Mbps.

Apple has not yet revealed when it plans to launch the iPhone 12 series. Earlier, it confirmed that the new flagship series might debut a little later than usual. Several insiders have conflicting information about the launch date of the iPhone 12, but most of them are claiming it might happen in October.
