Fans will once again see Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) back on the small screen. Showtime surprised everyone with the announcement of the revival of the much-loved TV series, Dexter, after seven years.

Dexter revival would be a limited series that would feature ten new episodes. Of course, Hall would reprise his iconic role as the blood spatter specialist, Dexter, who works with the Miami police department and moonlight as a vigilante killer.

Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levine said in a statement, via Devdiscourse, they would only revisit Dexter's unique story if they could find a "creative take" that would be worthy of the original series. Fortunately, executive producer Clyde Phillips and Hall himself finally found great story to tell.

Dexter started to air in 2006 and ran for eight seasons until 2013. With its success, it had been lined with the likes of the ambiguous anti-heroes on the history of U.S. television, like Tony Soprano from The Sopranos and Don Draper from Mad Men.

In the Season 8 finale, Dexter pulled the plug of his sister's, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), life support machine. He dumped her body at sea and sailed into the hurricane to his demise.

Some assumed it would be the death of Dexter. But, the showed ended, showing Dexter was still alive and working as a lumberjack.

Showtime has yet to announce the Dexter revival's official plot or if any other of the original cast will also return. It only says it hopes to begin its production this year so that it can be out in the fall of 2021.

With the show's ending, Forbes noted fans are quite divided on Dexter's fate. It was an upsetting goodbye for some, mostly because it didn't have a proper finish.

Some said the finale was "anticlimactic" and "frankly disappointing." With the death of a fan-favorite character and Dexter's separation from his family, Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) and son, Harrison, it just left a lot of unanswered questions and unresolved storylines.

With Dexter's fame, he surely deserved something better. For such a brilliant show, its ending felt incomplete and unfit.

Fans have been hoping to see more of the Dexter's storyline. Thanks to Showtime, it will finally happen.

With the upcoming collaboration between Phillips and Hall, the seven-year wait may be all worth it. It may give justice to Dexter's beautiful story and a proper conclusion that fans want to see on Dexter.
