Vikings season 6 is the final installment of the historical drama series. The show is currently on its midseason break and the return date remains uncertain. Since this is the final season, fans have been hoping that some familiar faces will comeback.

Vikings season 6 could feature the return of Athelstan (George Blagden), a major character from season 1 to 3. He is an Anglo-Saxon monk before being kidnapped by Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his men. Eventually, the two developed a mutual interest in each other.

Athelstan became interested in the Vikings gods and religious rituals, while Ragnar wanted to learn more about Christianity. They became loyal friends because of this, with the latter even baptized to experience the religion himself.

While not all Vikings like Athelstan, he developed friendships with others. However, Ragnar's friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) doubted Athelstan and his actions, thinking that Christianity was a danger to them. He believed that he is one of their biggest threats and ended up killing him.

Now, fans have been wondering if there's a chance for Athelstan to come back in Vikings season 6. His return might be possible since Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), his illegitimate son with Judith (Jennie Jacques), saw a vision of him in the lake back in season 5.

Alfred never met his father, but he had fallen ill and began hallucinating. He realized that the cloaked monk in his vision was his father, who's seemingly warning him that a huge battle is coming. This could be a way for the character to bring him back in the story.

Athelstan already appeared in other visions and there's a possibility he'll appear again in the second half of Vikings season 6. Though uncertain, fans believe Alfred is returning to help win with the battle against Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen).

In the event that Alfred, indeed, comes back, there's a huge chance he'll see Athelstan in his vision again. He could guide and warn him about the danger coming. The speculation about the character's appearance further fuelled after Blagden posted something on his Instragam account.

In September, the actor posted a throwback photo of him on the set while holding a phone on his ear. Then, in early October, he shared another throwback photo of himself as Athelstan and co-star Fimmel as Ragnar. This makes fans even more excited about his potential return in the second half.

Meanwhile, the official return date is unknown as of this writing. But, it is expected to arrive before 2020 ends on the History Channel. The series might follow its usual release date schedules, with the previous installments returning in November.

Also, there's no need to worry even though Vikings season 6 is the final one. It was confirmed that a spin-off, titled Vikings: Valhalla, is heading over at Netflix. It's going to be the continuation of the flagship show but takes place 100 years after the original.
