Demon Slayer: Mugen Train's box-office weekend surprised the world. When it opened on Friday, October 16, it already earned ¥4.6 billion or almost ¥$44 million.

It is considered the best movie opening in Japan in box-office history. Sure, the dust is settling after the COVID-19 pandemic hits the world.

But despite the down economy, there are questions as to how the movie made huge earnings. According to the Japan Times, the franchise's popularity helps the film to be a box-office hit.

It is based on the famed manga series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, set in the Taisho Era in Japan. It tells the story of a young man, Tanjiro Kamado, whose journey's sole purpose is to restore his sister's humanity.

Just like what the title suggests, the franchise also features some demon-slaying. The manga itself can be seen on Shonen Jump, starting from 2016 to up to this year.

Although Demon Slayer goes head to head with the magazine's other famous manga series, like Dragon BallBleach, and One Piece, it manages to introduce its original elements. The franchise continues to be big with its anime adaptation by the studio Ufotable.

The anime alone has driven the original manga series' sales, which get so high it manages to dominate the sale charts with its multiple volumes for weeks. Manga retailers are forced to put their stocks behind the shelves' counter due to the Demon Slayer-inspired thefts.

Alfred Toh from the anime tourism website Mipon revealed Demon Slayer has a huge appeal to fans because of its emotional and understandable theme. So, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train becomes a big hit despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
