BTS’s Rap Line is consists of three members: RM, Suga, and J-Hope. The boys are not only three of the coolest idols in the K-Pop world, but they are heavily involved in the songwriting process and became full members of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA).

Just like other songwriters, RM, Suga, and J-Hope also have their own technique in writing music. In a new interview with WSJ. Magazine, BTS’s Rap Line revealed their different methods.

RM, who has over 160 songs attributed to him by KOMCA, shared that he takes inspiration from various things, such as dialogue from films, in his songwriting process. The BTS leader noted that writing songs takes a lot of time and effort, so it hurts him physically and emotionally when he had to get rid of them.

KOMCA attributes over 100 songs to Suga, and he shared that he takes inspiration from books in his songwriting process. He even brought one to read during BTS’s vacation in an exclusive location for In The Soop. He was also seen jotting his thoughts down while reading.

Suga said that he tends to “think a lot about the meaning behind words.” He added that people deal with a lot of emotions, so he spends a lot of time thinking about how to interpret his words.

As for J-Hope, who also has over 100 songs attributed by KOMCA to his name, his approach is a lot different from RM and Suga. The “Ego” rapper focuses more on the mood of what he is creating. He also does a lot of research to convey his message successfully.

“Sometimes, the type of stories I’m dealing with are light, but sometimes they aren’t, so it’s important that I’m knowledgeable about what I’m working on,” he said.

Meanwhile, BTS’s Rap Line doesn’t only have different methods in writing music, but their solo songs also highly differ in terms of melody and overall feeling. “Persona,” “Shadow,” and “Ego” perfectly described RM, Suga, and J-Hope’s different outlook on life.

RM has been constantly preaching to their fans and anyone who would listen to love themselves — flaws and all. “Persona” is about finding your fate and yourself.

In “Shadow,” Suga talked about discovering that success comes with a price, and he seemed to not be ready for it. However, he learned that he must co-exist with fame and destruction.

As for J-Hope, he took everyone down memory lane in “Ego” by recreating his adorable childhood photo. He also reflected on his seven-year journey with the group and described how he learned to balance himself as J-Hope of BTS and Jung Hoseok, the regular guy.
