Prodigal Son season 2 is officially coming in 2021 on Fox. The series has been on hiatus since April, but the network renewed the show for another installment in May. Now, viewers have been getting updates on how the story moves forward following the events in the season 1 finale.
The Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage) revelation is going to be one of the biggest storylines entering Prodigal Son season 2. She has so much more in common with her father, Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen), who's incarcerated for 23 murders using the name "The Surgeon."
When the renewal of the second installment announced, Fox dropped a teaser featuring Ainsley. She is responsible for the death of Nicholas Endicott (Dermot Mulroney). This incident turned her to be a completely different person and somewhat terrifying.
Everything that happened in the season 1 finale further complicates Malcolm Bright's (Tom Payne) life. He needs to find a way how to handle the big revelation about his sister while figuring out how to deal with their father and taking on new cases at the same time.
According to the official synopsis of Prodigal Son season 2, Bright's life shook to the core following his sister's action at the end of the first installment. He must take care of Ainsley and protect his mother, Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young), from a secret that could tear their family again.
However, the situation gets more complicated when Martin attempts to repair and deepen his relationship with Bright. He wanted to get close to his "prodigal son," but as he forges this bond, some unexpected twist and revelations will be uncovered.
Prodigal Son season 2 continues to follow Bright's battle against the horror of his part. He's already traumatized by what his father did, and his sister's action could influence him, as well. He continues working with the NYPD while trying to fight the demons on his mind.
Meanwhile, the poster of the upcoming installment has been released with Bright at the forefront of everything while Martin leers over him in blood. Payne's character is wearing an all-white suit, which indicates purity but impossible to clean once tainted.
The blood in the key art also suggests that "killer instinct runs in the family." This isn't a reference to Bright, but more to Ainsley. Considering what she did, she's possibly becoming more like their father. This is something her brother has to deal with along the way.
